Our science center will be sprouting seeds this month. We have begun to germinate bean seeds and will plant pumpkin seeds after scooping out the insides of a giant gourd. Observations about pulp and seeds, as well as the size and weight of pumpkins, will be recorded and shared. Students will be called upon to make predictions about what will happen when seeds are given sun, water and soil.
The sensory table has been filled with seeds and this activity has students sorting and filling up containers of corn kernels, peas and sunflower seeds.
This will be a very active month for our students and families. Our field trip to Scott’s Orchard will be a rich experience for our students. I have given each student a list of five things to be on the look-out for at the orchard. We will be able to pick apples and pumpkins and purchase produce for the classroom. Each class will have an apple taste test after the trip. Red, green or yellow, which apple will taste the sweetest or crunchiest? Students will be learning about simple graphs after choosing their favorite kind of apple and charting the results.
Students will be busy creating many masterpieces for our parent night on October 19. We invite parents and their children to join us for a special evening at school with refreshments. Each student will be making invitations to send home but please save this date.
Halloween will be observed in the classroom with parties and parades. The Tuesday/Thursday classes will get the chance to wear their costumes to class on Thursday, October 27. Our MWF classes will celebrate on Halloween, October 31. Students will parade around the school and then sing autumn songs before getting their treats. Events begin 15 minutes before the end of each class.
Please remember that to keep germs at bay it is important that students wash their hands before entering the classroom. Cold and flu season will be upon us before we know it and we would like to keep our students healthy.
If you have not handed in your child’s health form please do so by the end of the week. State of CT Dept. of Public Health requires that every child have a current health record on file. Our health consultant will be reviewing the files this week.
Hope your October is filled with lots of treats and a few tricks.
