A Dynamic, Hands-on Learning Center for 3, 4 and 5 year-olds.

April 2012
The three R’s are going green this month when the students learn to reduce, renew, and recycle. It is important to expose young children to environmental issues and social dilemmas. In short we need to help children love the earth before we can ask them to save it.
Teaching children to respect and protect the earth is an age-appropriate approach to helping students understand the fragile ecosystems that are in danger when we pollute the air, water and soil.
We will begin our earth-friendly unit with discussions on recycling and why it is important reduce the amount of trash we throw away. We will be looking through the garbage to find items that can easily be recycled, like juice boxes and plastic bags after snack. Students will be identifying numbers as they sort through the CDE recycling bin. Numbers on plastics are meaningful and students will search and find numbers in a unique and significant manner.
Gardening is a great source of exploration and environmental education and our students will be planting zinnias that we hope will grow in time to give to mothers for Mother’s Day. For Earth Day we will be planting shrubs on the playground, fostering a positive message how as a group we can be environmental stewards of the earth.
Exploration of pond life will also help to create a love and respect of an ecosystem that our students will find interesting to discover. Giving students a positive connection to nature will inspire them to see the wonder of our world.
